Professional Tree Service in Plano, TX

Plano is one of the largest and most established cities in Collin County — a city of mature neighborhoods, substantial tree canopies, and the full range of tree service needs that come with decades of growth. Unlike newer North Texas cities where most tree issues involve young planted trees, Plano's established areas are home to large live oaks, native pecans, mature cedar elms, and thousands of aging Bradford Pears that were planted throughout the 1980s and 1990s.

McKinney Trees is based in neighboring McKinney and serves all of Plano daily. We provide the same professional crew, written estimates, and cleanup standards to Plano homeowners that we do throughout Collin County.

Plano's Bradford Pear Problem — and What to Do About It

Plano has tens of thousands of Bradford Pear trees planted in subdivisions and along roadways. These trees — now 25–40 years old in many neighborhoods — are reaching the end of their structural life. Bradford Pears are notoriously prone to branch splitting and whole-tree failure, especially as they age past 20 years. The included bark where their major branches meet the trunk creates a built-in structural failure point.

We remove Bradford Pears routinely throughout Plano. Stump grinding is strongly recommended after removal — Bradford Pear stumps resprout aggressively and, where they escape, have become an invasive species concern in Texas. We grind all stumps to 10–12" below grade to eliminate resprouting.

Common Tree Challenges in Plano, TX

  • Bradford Pear structural failure: The most common emergency call we get from Plano. As these trees age, their co-dominant stems split — sometimes slowly over several storms, sometimes suddenly in a single wind event. Pre-removal before structural failure is safer and often cheaper than emergency removal after a failure.
  • Large live oak management: Plano's older neighborhoods have live oaks that have grown to substantial size. These trees are valuable assets but require proper pruning to maintain safe clearance over structures and driveways, and to remove deadwood that accumulates over time. Improper cuts on live oaks can create entry points for oak wilt — our crews follow TAMU Agrilife protocols on all oak work.
  • Pecan deadwood and drop risk: Mature pecans on Plano properties commonly develop deadwood in the upper canopy. Pecan deadwood can be substantial in weight and drop unexpectedly. Routine deadwood removal every 3–5 years on large pecans significantly reduces liability and damage risk.
  • Clay soil root stress: Plano sits on Blackland Prairie clay that expands and contracts dramatically with moisture changes. Trees in poorly drained areas — including many suburban lawn areas with compacted soil — develop shallow root systems that make them more susceptible to wind-throw. Assessment of root zone conditions is part of our estimate process.
  • Storm damage from severe weather: Plano's position in the Dallas-Fort Worth metro doesn't provide much natural wind protection. Severe thunderstorms with straight-line winds are the leading cause of sudden tree failure in the area. Pre-storm canopy thinning and hazard tree identification are worth scheduling before each spring storm season.
  • City of Plano tree ordinance: Plano protects trees 6" DBH or larger in certain contexts related to development and construction activity. Most standard residential removals don't require a city permit, but properties undergoing development or renovation near protected trees may have requirements. We assess this during your estimate.
